Boy my title is a mouthful just to say we went to see some hot air balloons! Barb joined us on Thursday night for a trip over to Ellicott City, MD (about 35 minutes from base) to see some hot air balloons. We were super excited because they were doing a mass ascension at 630pm and then the balloon glow at 830pm. Well as it turns out it was too windy to do much of anything.
We parked at the Howard County Fairgrounds and then rode buses to Turf Valley (which I guess was a fancy resort/golf club that didn't want all the cars...there was certainly enough place to park). We had to pay $5 to park at the fairgrounds (money went towards a school athletic program). Katelynn was completely thrilled that she got to finally ride a school bus!!
Denver was excited too and spent most of the trip clinging to Barb and looking out the window.
There were a couple vendors there - which was good since we couldn't actually do what we came to do. They had a van called the Peppermint Pony. It had 3 miniature ponies and one Lady dressed as a Fairy (she was doing face painting).
This one was Katelynn's favorite. The brown/white one was actually really skittish and kept trying to get away from all the kids.
Barb bought us all a funnel cake to share - it was the kiddos first one and they loved it. Katelynn was eating handfuls of powered sugar. Somehow I only managed to get pictures of Chris eating all the powdered sugar. ;)
I LOVE Denver's face in this one...
Barb was nice enough to share her lemonade with Katelynn too...
Turns out one hot air balloon was willing to give it a go...
There were about 4 people holding the ropes attached to the top. It started out with just the guy in the backwards hat, but he quickly needed help. They were getting quite a workout with the balloon blowing all over the place.
Almost up. We joked that Curves was going to get lots of new business for being the only balloon that managed to get up.
Finally up!
They tried to get this one up too, but in the hour and half we were there it didn't get any bigger then this...
Katelynn and the other kids had a blast running around. Every time the balloon did a wild dive the parents would go running for their kids. It was very comical to watch.
See all those people piled around the basket? Yep, it took all of them to hold it still, plus another 4 on the rope attached to the top.
We had a really fun time, and stayed until dusk. You could see the balloon just starting to glow, but we couldn't stay any longer. The kids were really cold. I brought jackets and a blanket, but for some reason they just weren't helping.
