Week Three

Well Katelynn is exactly three weeks old today; she's still supposed to have one more week before arriving, but we couldn't be happier that she's here. Both Mom and Baby are healthy and doing well. Katelynn had her two week check-up on Monday and she's put on 10 ounces since leaving the hospital! She is now 5lbs 13 ounces and 19 1/4" long. It is amazing how quickly time is going by - I still can't believe she's here! It's been a very busy week - Chris went back to work and I had two final exams and a paper to finish for school. Thankfully all of my teachers were very supportive this semester and let me finish my work over the last 3 weeks at home.


With everything that has been going on over the past 3 weeks Chris decided that I needed a little "pick-me up," so today he gave me a special treat! I got to be pampered with a nice haircut and highlight while Chris watched the baby. It was wonderful to be out and about, and I feel so much better about myself. :)

One Week Old

Well Katelynn is only supposed to be 37 weeks along today, but since she wanted to debut early she's a week old instead. It is amazing how quickly time has gone by. We never expected being parents to be this enjoyable. It seems like I can never stop watching her. I'll walk up to her crib while she's sleeping just to stare at her. After breastfeeding, I'll just sit there and hold her. Watching Chris holding her is another feeling that's hard to describe. The love I feel for both of them can not be put into words. This is definitely an experience I will forever cherish.
So, anyway we celebrated her first week by giving her a sponge bath, and let me tell you she was not thrilled with this new experience! I think her favorite part was getting to wear new pj's. Here are some photos of her in her pj's - Chris was trying to sympathize with her. :)


We also had some "Tummy Time" today. She liked this more then the bath! It was the cutest thing in the whole world to watch her. We put her on her stomach to help encourage her to raise her head, but instead she inched all over the quilt. Her little legs were kicking like a bronco horse. She did manage to figure out how to roll herself over, and that was fun to watch.

We had our first appointment with the pediatrician yesterday. It was technically Katelynn's first trip out, and it had snowed all day and was about 20 degrees outside! We had her so bundled in her car seat - she looked very cute (unfortunately no photos of that trip). The doctor said she's doing very well. She is at 5lbs 3 ounces and gaining so that's good. Her bruising from being breech is starting to go away, and her jaundice is getting better. We go back in 2 weeks for her next checkup.

She's Here!!

Chris and I drove down to Colorado Springs on Thursday for Thanksgiving, on the way home I was complaining to Chris about how I just didn't feel right. My stomach felt crampy, and I thought something was wrong. At 2am Friday morning my water broke! I called the Doctor's office and they said to get my bag and head to the hospital. Since all of this happened 4 weeks before I was expecting it to - we didn't have a bag packed! We were going to do that over the weekend. So we grabbed some stuff and threw it in a bag. We got to the hospital around 330am. I was not experiencing any cramping and they said that I wasn't even dilated. Over the next few hours my cramping started, I went from 0 to 8 cm, they determined that Katelynn was breech, and we went in for an emergency C-section. At 10:04am (6 1/2 hours after we arrived at the hospital) Katelynn Mae Gillen arrived into this world! She weighed 5lbs, 8ounces and was 18 1/2 inches long. They had her on oxygen for several hours (I didn't even get to see her until 7pm that night), and they kept her in NICU for the rest of the night. We stayed in the hospital until Monday morning when they released both me and Katelynn.
We are both doing well since arriving home. The stitches from the emergency c-section take some getting used to, but I'm adjusting and getting around well. Katelynn is doing great! Since she was breech she had a lot of bruising on her body which makes her more susceptible to Jaundice, so she is a little yellow right now, but hopefully that'll pass in time. Also, because she was breech in a few weeks we'll have to go and have her hips/pelvic area x-rayed to make sure that all is well in that area. We have our first appointment with the Pediatrician tomorrow at 3pm, so hopefully all will go well!
